If you love to take photographs and have an eye on how to capture the moment, working as a freelance photographer might be a good profession or business to start. With this type of job you go to the job instead of the job coming to you. The only start up costs would be for a great camera, dark room supplies and an area where you can develop your pictures, and money to advertise your business. If you do a good job it will not be hard to get clients through word of mouth from previous clients.
Most freelance photographers work from home and do their work on location. You could be hired to shoot weddings, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, engagement and graduation pictures, and more.
Although you will get some business through word of mouth, you should still have professional business cards so you can hand them out when a situation arises. All you need on your business card is your name, email address, phone number, and your title as a freelance photographer. Pass out your business cards to friends and family, get permission to leave them in beauty shops, doctor's offices, etc. Ask the beauty shop if you could use their shop to do glamour shots and offer them part of the price.
The next thing that you need to do is set up a price list. To make sure that you are not charging too much or too little, check out some of the other freelance photographers in your area.
